DULCE MELOS

"Dulce melos," Latin for "sweet melody" is the linguistic root of the hammered dulcimer, a descendent of the Persian "santur." Basil Cole's work with sound is built around original compositions and experimentation with this unique instrument, within which can be heard the drone of the Indian subcontinent, the bounce of tunes from the British Isles and fingerstyle guitar as well as the influence of the minimalists, namely, Lubomyr Melnyk, Pauline Oliveros and Philip Glass. Dulce melos cut its teeth scoring dance and performing on the streets of NYC, and that kinesthesis, when a million agitations coalesce into a beam of sound, is its heart.

TECTUM ARGENTI

JOANNA BYRNE | 2022 | 09:19 | UK | 16mm

A moving meditation on the process of therapeutic healing through reconnecting with the self in nature: shot, home-processed and hand-edited on silver-rich 16mm Fomapan reversal film.
"Tectum argenti" is the alchemists' ancient name for bismuth (Bi in the periodic table), meaning literally, 'silver being made'. In this film I wanted to evoke my difficult (but at times euphoric) personal journey of coming out and healing from the past.

IGNJAT MILIĆEVIĆ

Ignjat Milićević performs minor works for piano. Stylistically, his music could be described as minimalism with touches of impressionism and late romanticism. Time signatures and ostinatos evoke a emotion suffused with obsession and agony. Influences include Rachmaninoff, Chopin and Satie...

600 MOONS

CINDY STILLWELL | 2021 | 08:00 | US | 16MM

A young woman takes a walk in the woods and slips into another realm wherein she glimpses her future self. If we live long enough, we will have seen six-hundred moons at fifty years of life on earth. 600 Moons is a wordless experimental film that wonders about the fluidity of time, the fragility of our existence and what happens when we die

ALEKSANDAR NARANČIĆ

Aleksandar Narančić (NAR) was into electronic music since his teens. Firstly a great DJ, people say he was, but he retired from djing. As a producer he is long time proactive blasphemist.

At the moment he is experimenting with modular synths, drum machines and all kinds of analog stuffs and vintage devices. This will be his second performance on the Live Soundtrack.

PARTS

MICHAEL LYONS | 2022 | 04:47 | JAPAN |
16mm

This camera-less silent film examines parts and wholes. Electronic components were photogrammed on 16mm print stock. Displacements in time and space assemble the parts into an abstract dynamic gestalt.

EMBERS FROM YESTERDAY, AFLAME

WILLIAM HONG-XIAO WEI | 2022 | 10:00 | UK | 35MM, 16mm, Super 8

A transcendental meditation on withered trees struggling to be reborn. A fleeting glimpse into the seemingly trivial occurrences of daily life. A sheer ecstasy of physical intimacy viewed through celluloid films, in which the life of the emulsion is decaying: during the lockdown, film footages were “disinfected” by disinfectant, surface cleanser and hand sanitiser gel, specifically, household chemicals which were alleged to “kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses”, and which helped us prevent the spread of coronavirus. Returning images that have shapes to the shapeless, in the physical fragility of the cinematic medium, allows for the viewer’s hallucinatory perception of matter in a state of continual creation and dissolution. Through the evocation of the tension between transience and continuity, the film unfolds the dialectic of destruction and metamorphosis.
